Hidden in the hills near the village of Cerje, south of Niš, lies one of the most impressive caves in this part of Serbia. Explored only in recent decades, it runs for several kilometres underground, with large chambers and galleries decorated by stalactites, stalagmites, columns and delicate flowstone shaped over hundreds of thousands of years.
Guided sections lead through illuminated halls full of otherworldly formations, while above ground the karst plateau around Cerje rewards walkers with sweeping views over the Niš valley and a network of marked trails and viewpoints. It's a fine mix of underground wonder and open-air rambling in a single trip.
Good to know: caves stay cool year-round — around 10–12 °C — so bring a light jacket and proper shoes for the damp, uneven floor. Opening hours are limited and can be seasonal, so check locally or arrange a guide before you set off.
Getting there from Popoland: it's roughly 28 km and about a 40-minute drive south of Niš, the last stretch on a quieter country road. Pack a picnic and make a relaxed half-day of it with the family.
