East of Niš, the Nišava River has carved the spectacular Sićevo Gorge straight through the mountains — a roughly 17-km canyon of sheer limestone cliffs, forested slopes and a winding emerald river far below. It's a protected nature park and a haven for hikers, rock-climbers, birdwatchers and photographers, with viewpoints that open up around almost every bend of the old road.
The gorge is as rich in culture as it is in scenery. The village of Sićevo is famous for its vineyards and for one of the oldest art colonies in Serbia, founded in 1905. Tucked into the cliffs are two peaceful Orthodox monasteries — Sveta Bogorodica and Sveti Petar i Pavle — well worth the short detour for their frescoes and quiet courtyards.
Good to know: wear sturdy shoes and bring water, sun protection and a camera — some trails are rocky and exposed. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking, while late summer brings the grape harvest. Always leave time for a tasting at a family-run winery in the village.
Getting there from Popoland: head through Niš and east along the E80 — it's roughly 30 km and about a 35-minute drive to the heart of the gorge. An easy full or half-day out, especially good when you want big scenery without a long journey.
